Culture in India
India is a huge, densely populated country with a lot of different cultures. India’s culture belongs to the world’s oldest cultures that dates back to 2000 before Christ.
We are going to investigate the culture in Kolkata, which is the capital city of West-Bengal. It used to be the capital city of India, but was replaced by New Delphi in 1931.
Kolkata is positioned east to the Hooghly river and is the birth place of modern Indian literary, artistic and scholastic thought. With that, Kolkata is also the most prominent, cultural and educational city of east India. It is densely populated, but very rich. This metropolitan city faces problems such as substantial urban pollution, traffic congestion, poverty, overpopulation and many more social and economic problems.
‘Kolkata is the city of furious creative energy’, they say. Why? You might think. The most prime reason is the special appreciation for art and literature by the inhabitants. Kolkata hosts many local traditions throughout art, such as drama, literature, theatre, movies, music, dance, but also science, philosophy, photography, poetry and many, many more. Kolkata also has many cultural institutions. But the most dominant and modern speciality of Kolkata is sports.

Culture in Kolkata
Paras
In Kolkata are neighbourhoods with a strong sense of community, which are called ‘Paras’. You can recognize them by their basis of loyalties. These loyalties can differ from occupation, socio-economic status, politics, religion or place of origin. The paras all have it’s own community club and clubroom. Most paras have their own sports field. Inhabitants of this paras come together after work to chat in ‘rocks’ or ‘rowacks’. These meetings are called Adda. The para talks about news or any informal discussion with friends accompanied by food and tea. These chat sessions are healthy and never end with arguments or an ugly note.
In North Kolkata, occurs more street life at night than in South Kolkata, with cricket, football, badminton or indoor game tournaments.
Traffic
Overall, the Kolkata's are quite aggressive, especially on the road. In Kolkata are different ways of transport, but wherever and however you go, traffic jam is always a problem. The most common way of transport is the so-called share taxis, to get from railway stations to somewhere else. Another way of transport which is often used is carpooling, which is the concept of joining together with a local group, e.g. in your neighbourhood, to get to a specific place (usually in the city centre). A very common car in India is the Auto-rikshaws, which are cars with only 3 wheels, and which are especially made for small streets. The car has only five seats, but usually more than six people get in. As a European, the Indian traffic is crazy, with cars, busses, bicycles, people everywhere. The Indians are also very fond of the honk, so it is advisable to take ear pods with you when you are planning to go there.
The Kolkata's
Kolkatta is a reflection of the people. When you walk through the city in the morning, everywhere is action. People beginning the day with a cup of tea, to then go outside and fitness, walk, jog or stretch. You smell a variety of sweets and other delicious dishes. They are very fond of sweets, so every meal ends up with a delicious dessert. Also, if you like junk food, Culcatta is the place to go. The people are just like that, living with passion and enthusiasm, and express that with their talents. ‘Live life to the fullest’ is their inspirational quote. The best way to get to know the Bengalis is to join an Adda, which we have explained earlier. The Kolkata’s love music as well. So much, that when you visit houses in neighbourhoods, you can find a talented singer in almost every home. There are also lots of Festivities in the form of fairs, film fests, music conferences and folk fairs.
Sight-seeing is also a huge tourist attraction because of the many museums, galleries, heritage buildings, amusement parks, temples churches and synagogues
To conclude, Indians are family oriented and respect their family and family values a lot. Also, Indians are very competitve, compared to the rest of the world. However, they are exceptionally nice when you meet them and welcome you warmly and openly.
